Abstract American artist Howard Pyle (1853-1911), who founded the Brandywine School of Art, was one of the pre-eminent illustrators of his time. He also maintained a successful painting and teaching career. Thornton Oakley (1881-1953) was an illustrator who studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and illustration with Howard Pyle.
